Ozzy Osbourne: Live In Philly at the Philadelphia Tower Theatre - June 4 1989 (PPV Pro Shot)

A Snivlle Remastered Edition - Rev. III

VIDEO QUALITY: (9/10) Excellent remastered VHS transfer. Originally, the colors were somewhat "washed out" looking. Typical VHS grain and flicker were especially noticeable on the distant shots. This is no longer the case. The picture quality of this show comes very close to that of a quality laser disc transfer.

AUDIO QUALITY: (9/10) Excellent stereo sound with good balance and dynamic range.

LINEAGE: PPV Broadcast >> VHS (HQ) Master >> SA DVD-R >> DVD Decrypter/ Elementary Streams >> Professional-grade video editing software and filters >> CCE 2.67 SP
DVD Authored: Chaptered by song and features a nice motion menu.
VIDEO: NTSC 29.7 FPS, MPEG-2 720X480 @ 6630 kbps (Non-interlaced) - Top Field First
AUDIO: Dolby 2.0 @ 320 Kbps
RUNNING LENGTH: 1 hr. 25 min.

This release recently underwent the process of being remastered with Professional-grade video editing software. The incredible NeatVideo filter was used to denoise and apply high resolution enhancement to the footage. NeatVideo goes far beyond the capabilities of most freely available denoising filters. It uses a series of computationally precise algorithms that enable it to apply 'intelligent sharpening' without inducing any unwanted halo-like effects. The final product does not result in softened imagery.

The original source not only had a considerable degree of VHS noise, it also was very "washed-out" looking. This is no longer the case. Black levels were increased by 7 percent (without affecting white levels and the middle gamma color range). General color and contrast corrections were applied, giving skin tones and other elements a more natural appearance. Color saturation was increased by 25 percent to bring out richer color vibrancy in the stage lighting, clothing colors, etc.

The edited footage was then frame-served from within the NLE (non linear editer) directly to CCE 2.67 SP and encoded at a high bitrate of 6630 kbps with advanced vertical filtration and high quantization enabled. Unless you are lucky enough to find a digital transfer or a Master SVHS dub from off of the original broadcaster's reel, I believe that you will find that this version is one of the best.

To maintain the highest picture and sound quality possible, it was necessary to cut some of the non-essential material. The pre-show footage and also the subsequent interview were removed from this release. I have plans of incorporating the footage that has been cut with (3) complete Ozzy videos as a "Bonus" disc sometime in the future.

This release has undergone extensive digital processing. This release is the 3rd revision of the project. The first two encodings of the concert looked great, but I wanted to make sure that it reached optimum restoration results. The PC that was used to complete this project is only a 3.06 Ghz. P4 w/ HT and 1 GB of Rambus memory. The video processing, in particular, was very CPU intensive and took a considerable length of time; about 86 hours in total. It is my sincere wish that my all of my fellow traders will enjoy this newly "Remastered Edition".

Many thanx to Steinar for the source.

Ozzy Osbourne - Vocals
Zakk Wylde - Guitars
Geezer Butler - Bass
Randy Castillo - Drums

It is an unfortunate fact of "video-geek" life that there are only 240 lines of resolution inherent in VHS recordings. This number can obviously not compare to the 540 lines of resolution seen in commercial DVDs. The motivation behind all "Snivlle Remastered Edition" DVDs is not to compete with commercial DVD quality; rather, it is to get older VHS footage as close as possible to the quality of SVHS and Laser Disc.

Catch The Rainbow / Tracy G solo
The Last In Line

Notes: Another in a box of purchased VHS tapes, this one looks pretty low generation and is very well shot; I converted this
DVD on July 28, 2013. This is Dio in his wilderness years, putting in a powerful and intense performance. Tracy G gets a lot
of guff from fans, and I don't think he was the greatest writer, but, he is undoubtedly an interesting guitar player and I
enjoy hearing his take on the classics. This Dio band is very different from the one that was started 15 years earlier, but,
this is a solid performance and a very well shot video from an underrated time period.

Notes: The second of four times that we saw Heaven and Hell; we caught the first show up in Vancouver, uncertain if there would
be an American leg to the tour. Of course, after we'd already booked the trip, they announced the spring American leg of the tour.
So, of course, we were going to see the one in our own backyard, too! This was arguably a better show than the Vancouver one, as
the band had been playing together for about 6 weeks at this point and were much tighter the second time around. To me, I was
astonished that none of the four H&H shows I went to were sold out - didn't everyone realize what an event this was?

Overall, this is pretty well shot - I like shooting in this venue, as it's not huge, and there's a great sight line from the back
center. I also shot this in widescreen and used Sony Vegas to complete the transfer. This was originally intended to be a two-cam
edit; in fact, I've made one, but, Loudpuppy's camera severely malfunctioned this night, and left the video image grainy and full
of digital lines. I did use Loudpuppy's footage, however, for the drum solo, when I was changing my DV tapes; there's a little
hiccup at the end of the drum solo, where the very end repeats (can't remember what happened there in my editing). I've done a
variety of transfers of this footage over the years since the show; this version was converted to DVD DL on September 14, 2014.
As with all my films, my wife assisted at unremembered spots during the show, when I had to use the restroom. My son was also present
for this show, as were Loudpuppy and my oldest friend Ricky.

Uploader's notes:
I don't think this has ever been shared from the master, and this is my own transfer of a VHS1 using an S-VHS VCR. So it is most likely the best that'll circulate for this particular show. ASA the video itself, it's a little above average for a lawn shot but still typical of videos like it. A little distant and some heads/hands in the way, occasionally screen shot. Very clear picture and pretty steady for a handheld from the back.

Notes: Another tape from the Gary's Black Sabbath set; this one was his original VHS tape, which was marked as "1st gen". 2nd
show of the summer Ozzfest tour, this is a pretty well-filmed show, alternating between the stage and (mostly) the screen,
depending upon what the rest of the crowd is doing at any given moment; there are quite a few obstructions. I authored this DVD

Notes: At the end of 2003, Gary's Black Sabbath (the website) started selling off his VHS tapes...so, I did the logical thing
and bought something on the order of 80+ videos from him over the course of about six weeks. I then spent the next several
months doing conversions of the tapes that I bought; this show is from that batch of videos and was converted on January 7, 2004.
I'm not sure how circulated this show is, but, this is my own conversion and, to my knowledge, has never been shared online before.

This was the first show of the second leg of the '99 USA tour and includes a rare complete performance of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Ozzy sings it much like Tony Martin did when he was performing it on the '95 tour, but, not nearly as strongly - it's no surprise
that it was immediately dropped and (to my knowledge) never performed again. I'll give ol' Ozz props for trying! I thought the
'99 tour - which was also the first full tour with Bill Ward back in the band - was very strong and, while everyone was complain-
ing about Ozzy's voice back then, in retrospect, he actually sounds pretty good!

Notes: Another early '99 show from the Gary's Black Sabbath batch of tapes. Shot from the side, this is a well filmed (if a
little generated), good sounding show that fans will want in their collections. Due to the location, I wonder if this isn't
a Lividz recording, but, I do not know for sure, as it doesn't have any of his typical watermarks. I transferred this VHS
tape to DVD on March 24, 2004.

The Black Sabbath Show (cartoon)

Notes: Another from the Gary's Black Sabbath batch; this is the 12th show of the tour. Gary used to list the gen of the tapes on
his site, but, when I bought these, I was just thrilled to have the shows - I didn't really care about the lineage. At some point,
I started looking for in the information on-line, but, his website seems to have disappeared for good, so, I can't say for sure.
This much is certain: in some instances he sold me his original tape, in others, he sold me a dub of his original. The guy had a huge
collection and so a lot of his stuff was very low gen. Some, not so much - this show is pretty generated, but, is well-shot and
definitely watchable.

Black Sabbath

Psychophobia
The Wizard
Cross Of Thorns

Rondinelli solo
Headless Cross
Paranoid (cuts out)

Notes: Still more from the Gary's Black Sabbath batch; this is the last show of the European part of the Cross Purposes tour and
Bobby Rondinelli's last show of the tour. He was replaced for the South American leg by Bill Ward, thus restoring the original
Black Sabbath to a 3 member quorum. To me, that's what ultimately gave Tony Martin credibility in Sabbath - playing with Tony, Bill
and Geezer.

Truly, the Cross Purposes album was very strong and the tour setlist was very well balanced between the new album, Dio-era and
Ozzy-era classics. This is an incomplete document of that, as it's missing the beginning and the encore, pretty shaky, but, decent
angles and good sound. If you're a fan...

Notes: Still more from the Gary's Black Sabbath batch: only a handfull of Tyr tour shows were played, so, very little exists
on video - this is probably the best example. This video is a bit generated, but, sounds pretty good and has some pretty decent
(if occasionally shaky) camera work. Don't expect a masterpiece, but, very well worthwhile for fans. I converted this from VHS
to DVD on October 7, 2003.

notes: awesome performance from the end of the US leg of the Cross Purposes tour. This is probably my favorite tour from
the non-Ozzy, non-Dio eras, as the setlist is an excellent overview of their entire songbook, including songs from the very
underrated Cross Purposes album, which featured the (brief) return of Geezer Butler.

I was not aware of their being multiple angles; I had a fairly high gen VHS tape of the center angle that I had purchased
on eBay, and was expecting the same when I bought several dozen (!) original VHS tapes from Gary's Black Sabbath website back
in 2004. I was surprised to find a different angle; Gary had this listed as the 2nd gen. About a year later, Ron/Damage, Inc.
lent me his 1st gen copy of the center angle that he obtained directly from the taper (which I extracted to .avi for future use),
and a year or so after that, I decided to take a crack at doing an edit. I was delighted to find that the tapes were largely
compatible, and was able to quickly compile a very watchable, almost professional quality version of this classic show.

The performance is very high energy and the crowd is very into it; there's a very active mosh pit that develops at the front
of the stage and goes on for much of the show. Someone in the crowd also holds up a large crucifix, which really adds atmosphere
to the film. Both angles are largely without obstruction and quite clear, considering their age. For any fans of this particular
era of the band, this is the best amateur/audience representation and is a must have.

upgrade or not, I'm sharing it here on the chance that it may be. I will say it's a bit better than what I've seen u/l on Youtube but I understand that that's not a fair comparison.

underrepresented Headless Cross tour of '89. Man, I wish I could've seen this tour with this setlist - which, for me, are the
biggest advantage of the Tony Martin years: his willingness to sing songs from across the entire Sabbath catalogue.

Notes: This is the only circulating video from The Eternal Idol tour. The raw VHS tape was really boomy audio-wise and rather
obscured by the taper's position. I thought it would be clever to take a better sounding audio CDR that I had acquired in a snail
mail trade and dub it into the .avi file from the video. This proved to much more difficult than I initially imagined, and along
the way, I started making "improvements" to the video file using filters in Premiere. In retrospect, what I did was a first attempt,
but, I didn't have the time or the energy to do any further work on it, so, thus it stands "Essen Eternal". This was another video
I obtained through Gary's Black Sabbath website circa fall 2003.

My friend Loudpuppy was over here this afternoon, and I showed him excerpts of each video and asked which he preferred, as a casual
Black Sabbath fan. He felt this version was superior, due to the higher quality audio. The video in the "remaster" is less detailed,
but, not so much of a downgrade to be overcome by it, especially with the mixed in superior audio. I completed this remaster in
March of 2005.

Notes: More from the Gary's Black Sabbath batch: this is one of the few USA performances of the Headless Cross tour to be caught
on video. Loudpuppy reminds me that this is the era of Sabbath that he first heard, and while it took me a while to get there, I
now see the value in these Tony Martin albums. This is pretty generated, with obstructions and ducks, but, well worth watching for
fans of the tour or band. I converted this from VHS to DVD on January 14, 2004.

After the Show

Notes: Surprisingly watchable video, considering the year it was shot and the equipment that was used - in fact, what I love about
watching these old videos is imagining the effort it took to do it back then! And the result is like being in a time machine when
you watch it - this is NOT Sabbath's best performance, but, it remains one of my favorite all-time shows!

But, is this Sabbath? Of course, this features Glenn Hughes in one of his less celebrated performances - yet, the setlist is totally
awesome, and features songs that would never be played again. This is totally worth watching if you're at all a Sabbath historian.

Another of my early VHS transfers, I completed this on January 21, 2004. I got this tape from another well-respected Sabbath trader
who offered this up in exchange for a DVD conversion; I did a few of those deals in the last days of VHS trading. It's funny to
look back on those conversions; it really made watching them a lot easier.

At 37:51, the recording is stopped then restarted, looks like some of the 'waiting for the encore crowd participation is cut' then cuts back in, still waiting for Sabbath to come back to the stage.
